After marrying in 1989, Colleen moved with her husband to Dayton, but then only five years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Unable to work, caring for a few stray animals filled her time and warmed her heart. Those few strays grew into 27 dogs and cats. She swears they were telling their friends about her great care, but those strays showed her just how much they were like humans. If she was sad or sick, they would stay close by to bring her comfort. In 2012, she started getting Meals on Wheels after her husband underwent heart surgeries and then prostrate cancer followed. Unfortunately, he passed away and then a really bad stroke left Colleen in the hospital for nearly two months and her health has continued to be challenging. Now 73 years old, she says she probably would not eat much without the convenience of Meals on Wheels. “When I don’t feel good, I just don’t eat. As for my beloved strays, I am now down to 4 small dogs, 3 indoor cats and 2 ferals. The Senior’s Best Friend driver delivers pet food for my pets. These two programs have enabled me to stay in my home with my babies who help me keep from giving up on life. I am very grateful for these programs and the delivery drivers are a welcome gift. Thank you for this service.”
